Banyan Tree

We spent March Breck 2013 in Maui. Our first big trip, an absolute dream come true. 10 years and travels that have taken me around the world and back, Maui continues to hold tight to a piece of my heart.

The tree in the background of this photo is the oldest Banyan Fig tree in the US. It sits in the historic town square of Lahaina on the Island of Maui.

This week, one of the deadliest US wildfires in decades tore through this square, severely scaring this tree, reducing the entire town, an important part of Maui’s history and tourism to ashes, killing at least 53 people.

The people of Maui are 80% reliant on tourism for their livelihood. They continue to recover from Covid Losses. This devastation is not only another financial setback but a complete loss of their history, including a church where royals were buried and the original capital of the island.

This news sits heavy in my heart. I love you, Maui.
